How this service helps our guests

Imagine not being able to take a shower or bath for 18 months, which was the situation one of our guests was experiencing.

Many of our guests highlighted the lack of sufficient cleaning facilities for Oxford’s homeless community as one of their concerns. This issue was impacting strongly on their personal dignity and overall ability to improve their lives. We listened to our guests’ concerns and acted on them by launching the shower project at the Gatehouse community centre in June 2021.

We now offer shower sessions on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which need to be pre-booked. Sessions are for 30 minutes and all towels and toiletries are provided. Personal hygiene provision, which most people take for granted is also made available, together with a helper who can refer individuals to both internal and external services for additional support.

In 2023 we provided a total of 361 shower sessions for our guests, with that number likely to increase to over 400 in 2024.
